News, Blog and Event Online Sources!

Dear Bogota Expats,

I tried to do some research regarding some newspaper, magazine and blogs before I arrived in Colombia.  I have only found them now after being here a month - soon I will be looking to book tickets for different events and to keep up on the ongoing peace process.  Does anyone know when Juanes or Shakira plan to show up and give a concert?  The following are websites that can be useful for knowing what is going on in the city and the country itself!

Almost a Month-in to our Lives in Bogota!

Dear Bogota Expats!

It has been almost a month that we have been living here in Bogota, the grand capital of Colombia!  Within the confines of the 25+ blocks that we normally live (from block 69 to 95, the living is easy, expensive, and quite safe.  I can elaborate quite a bit on each of these adjectives.  Easy - the city is compact enough that everything you need can be found probably within 4-5 blocks, and surely everything within these 25+ blocks that I referred to.  You can have all the help that you want, though you have to get used to dealing with having a "staff" and managing them, which can be a lot of work if you are not used to it or don't have a schedule set up.  Expensive - as we are living in the northern part of the city, I would say it is easily the most affluent and expensive area of the city - where the rents are high, utilities are high, and this also includes the groceries and restaurants (we are 4 blocks away from the Zona G, "g" for gastronomy)!  It also seems the city is quite safe - I see police cars from time to time, but not in any crazy chase, and have not seen anyone being apprehended or pulled over for anything more than a fender-bender situation.  Every other corner has armed guards with serious machinery at the ready, but I have never heard or seen any action so far - thankfully!

FINDING NEW FRIENDS

I find more and more that I am in another period of my life, where after having moved as many times as I have years (I am hitting my fourth decade in a few hours!), it is much more to find and make new friends.  We also don't got out to bars or nightclubs anymore - we haven't for the last 9 years of our lives! And you find that you are who you are, and it is a lot of work to once again introduce yourself, build trust, and find a good network of good friends to have over on a Friday night, or for Sunday brunch, or just for heated up leftovers on a Tuesday night.

My husband studied at one of the best schools in Boston - yes, that one - and he made friends with a Chilean-Colombian who studied at the neighboring other best school in Boston - yes, that one.  So on Saturday, they arranged to have brunch together.  The plans changed, and we all of a sudden got invited over to his friend Natasha's place, who did her PhD at one of the best schools in northern California, yes, that one - no, the other one.  So, everyone is English speaking, but we spoke in Spanish 99.9% of the time.  They have a wonderful apt as part of a 4-apt complex in the mountains up beyond the Calera (the long winding drive up over the mountains from Bogota), where the views are stunning and you feel like you're in the countryside, even though you're only 20 or so minutes from Bogota.  (This is definitely a wonderful option to live instead of being in the city, though we might save this option for the last year!)  We had a great time getting to know each other and having a great chat - really spending the whole day together from 9:30am to 5:30pm!  After a French-inspired meal, we walked down to the river behind their house, and then sat outside in this huge sloping backyard that all the neighbors share.  I do hope we can get integrated into their lives - they are very interesting, well-traveled and open!  (Even after they dropped us off - I forgot to mention, the hostess Natasha so nicely came into the city to pick us up, then drive us back to our apt - they invited us out for the evening!)

CITY IS OPENING ITSELF UP!

We will live 4-5 blocks from Parque 93, and have found this is an incredible center of northern Bogota life.  Last week JEEP set up a huge exhibition/test drive track in the block that is always open for such events, like a blank stage that comes to life every week. This weekend, there was a huge Book Fair and also a few car brands took over the block to show off their new cars (Land Rover, Mercedes, KIA, Audi, etc. - even Frank, our VOLVO salesperson was there).  I imagine there must be many spaces like this in the city where there is much to do and see, and experience.

Day by day, we are finding the city opening itself up to us... and we are finding, little by little, it is quite nice to be here.

Lots of love, y abrazos,

Avila

Recommended "Jardines Infantiles" in Bogota!

Dear Bogota Expats,

Here is a list of day cares ("jardines infantiles") in the northern part of Bogota that you might be interested to check out for your children.  We are particularly interested in Sesamo Kids - located in two beautiful "finca" type buildings with a Reggio Emilia approach - and a new place that we just toured (opened last Monday, and they plan to open about 12 different places in Colombia) called Advenio, a chain from Mexico and the United States (built of the Bright Horizons model and constructivism).  It is the concept of a corporate daycare center that is targeted to working mothers and fathers that is open from 7:00am-8:00pm.  You are able to purchase cards that have 100 or 150 hours that must be used within 2 months, or a month-month membership!  It's an incredible place also!

TIPS

  • Make sure you make contact as soon as possible to take a tour of the jardin and speak with the director as the spots ("cupos") are filled at the best ones
  • At this point in October, we want two spots for January 2014, and our first choice jardin told us that they are now interviewing for August 2014
  • Ask about the child philosophies, what type of pricing (discount for siblings?), food served, how many children per group, other activities (swimming, pony clubs), profile of the parents
Below is a list that was passed to us that are located all over Bogota.

Saludos,
Ann-Marie

Alarm System Companies for your Home

Dear Bogota Expats!

As our new apt has a terrace and a small thin balcony that can be easily accessed by the other apts on our floor, it was recommended that we look into alarm systems.  Below is a short list of providers than can give us quotations on alarm systems - Telesentinel is the one used by my husband's organization:
  • Telesentinel LTDA  288 8788
  • G4S Technology 691 9191
  • Omnitempus 611 0529

Our New Home... Making Sure It's Perfect and SAFE!

Dear Bogota Expats!

We found a new home and crazy enough, we had canceled the appointment to see it initially because it was more than one floor (yes, sounds crazy to do so but we saw a loft and another penthouse that was not at all suitable!   Y'know when you have small babies, you are always cautious about such things.)  At the last minute, with the feeling we should see as many places as possible and as we were at the end of our search about to make an offer on another apt, I said to our relocation specialist  "Why not, let's see it!"  So off we went and even at the first glance of the design of the garage (still under construction), I was sold... after seeing the apartment itself, a penthouse of a newly constructed building right near Parque Virrey, I was "flippada!"  160 sq m apt with 3 carpeted bedrooms, 2 full baths and 2 1/2 baths and an 80 sq m private terrace?!!  Did I mention the gym, squash court and pool downstairs?  Woweeee... I knew we found our home.

THE QUICK NEGOTIATIONS

Finding a home and finally securing it is another matter.  The price was at the upper limit of our budget, unfortunately but is a steal for everything it is!  I would never dream of spending so much money in the US but since we were receiving a significant housing subsidy, this should be fine.  In any case, the negotiations had to begin.  There were a few strategies that we were planning to employ, namely offering to pay 6 months in advance in addition to 2 months of deposit.  We heard that a family with the US Embassy were interested, so we felt we had competition also.  Despite that we offered this pre-payment for a discount of 500,000 COP per month.  They did not accept.  I guess they didn't really care about pre-payments and the such.  We heard the Embassy also offered about the same amount too, also turned down.  Our relocation specialist told us that often realtors ("corredores" de "Finca Raiz") and owners do not like to deal with the embassies directly as there are many restrictions and security concerns that they would have to deal with.

Things that are different than renting in the US:
- there is no background or credit check (though I'm sure they feel comfortable with our family profile and professional backgrounds)
- we had to request the "linea blanca" (washer-dryer, refrigerator) to be put in (which normally would already be in place in the US)
- as we are foreigners and we can't have an account with the television, cable or internet companies, the accounts would have to be in the name of the owners and we would have to pay them directly
- the owners, who were vacationing in Miami want to meet us next week so that they can answer any questions that we have

As my husband works for an international organization, the security of the UN had to be sent to check out the apartment also.  Below are the following recommendations made (most would be accommodated by the owners):

REQUESTED CHANGES TO THE APARTMENT

Estimad@s,

_____________________________________________________________________________

Their reply:

Apreciados

Hope that gives you a good idea of moving into an apartment in Bogota!

[Update: we met with the wife only as the husband works for a pharmaceutical company and is traveling all over the world - from South Korea to India.  She was very cordial and professional, and understood all of our needs in regard to having small children.  I believe and hope we'll have good communication and a good professional owner-renter relationship.]

Estrato? Where you live matters... for the price of your utilities?!!

Dear Bogota Expats,

One of the most interesting things that is different than the US or other countries I've lived in is the very open distinction of the classes - delineated by the neighborhood you live (that generally reflects your economic and social class) - which are called "estrato."  Since 1994, depending on what your apartment building (neighborhood) is labeled as - from 1 (low-low) to 6 high, you either will receive subsidies or have to pay extra - "contribucion" - for your utilities (water, gas, electricity and even cable, home telephone and internet) unless you are part of "estrato 4" of which you don't have to pay or receive anything.  They created a tariff regiment that were based on the following criteria: "neutrality, solidarity, redistribution, financial sufficiency, economic efficiency, simplicity and transparency."  Those in hotels, which would be in the category of "no residenciales" would also be forced to pay up to an extra 20% contribution.

These is how the "estratos" are defined:
  • 1 low-low (up to a 50% subsidy)
  • 2 low (up to a 40% subsidy)
  • 3 medium-low (up to a 15% subsidy)
  • 4 medium (no subsidy, no contribution)
  • 5 medium-high (up to a 20% contribution)
  • 6 high (up to a 20% contribution)
Below I have put the most recent quoted prices for Claro's cable, telephone and internet bundled services (as of October 2013).  As you can see, the highest estratos are 5 and 6 - which would encompass the neighborhoods generally in the north (Rosales, Nogal, Chico, Chico Reservado, Santa Ana, Santa Barbara, etc).  There Claro salesperson that we are working with is Sr. Jose Dagoberto Zapata, Tel: 320 271 1508.  In the case you are intersted in DirecTV, the salesperson we were pointed to is Sergio Alejandro Sosa

Buying a Car - with Free On Board (FOB)

Dear Bogota Expats!

We have been shopping for a car here in Bogota, though the terrible traffic was the number one thing we were mostly warned about before moving here. (In Bogota, like in other big cities like Mexico City, they have the system of "pico y placa" where you can only drive your car every other work day - where the weekend is a free for all for everyone to drive as they wish.  The unintended result of this law was that people just bought more cars that had license plates with the other alternating number scheme!)  The public transportation here is not so great I have been told - by our housekeeper (empleada) and nanny (ninera) - where they each travel on the buses and the Transmilenio between 1-2.5 hours one way each day to get to us!

There are many dealerships that have worked with colleagues from my husband's international organization or with the many diplomats in Bogota in the past, as we are the capital city where all the embassies are.  The dealerships know about all the paperwork and you simply have to choose a car that is valued with your "cupo" limit.  For example, at my husband's professional level, he is allowed to import a car at a value of $30,000USD (but not even a penny more).  If he were at the director level, his "cupo" would be up to $50,000USD limit.

During our first trip here, we went to visit the Honda and Toyota dealership, but were not especially impressed.  They were still the same cars available in the US and the prices were reasonably high.  We decided on a Volvo XC60 T6 which has a special price for diplomaticos.  There is only one Volvo dealership in Bogota and with the general Volvo vibe is that they are not aggressively trying to sell their cars to you.  They believe those that want and respect the brand will come to them.  They are happy with their yearly sales of around 900 cars.  This is one of the main reason that we wanted a Volvo, that there are very few of them so the demand would be extremely low if it were stolen and resold for parts.  [We additionally will have diplomatic plates - blue ones with the letters "IO" for "international Organization (and not CP which stands for "cuerpo diplomatico") - and we are told that these are highly respected and car thieves won't even bother with trying to steal them.]

Though the car is valued at more than the cupo, we will pay the remaining balance apart from this.

Below is the actual price and payment plan-timeline for the car, as of the end of 2013.  After getting officially the diplomatic status and also making the first payment (must be from a Colombian bank account due to the domestic terrorism rules), we expect to get the car in January, 3-months later due to the Christmas holidays.

[Update - late Oct 2013:  We just received our bank account from Citibank and are now waiting for our official "diplomatic" status, and from that point, we will be able to start the paperwork in order to get the car out the "zona franca" and into our hands!  We may even get the car earlier - in December!  We can't wait!]

Hope that makes your car selection choices easier,

Avila

Our Apt Search in Bogota (Chico, Chico Virrey, Reservado, Rosales)

Dear Bogota Expats!
It's been quite a few days of apt searching here in Bogota.  We are receiving a significant housing allowance, though it is not able to or meant to cover the total cost of the housing and utilities.  I am pretty surprised by the cost of the apartments in Bogota (the northern part that we have investigated).

Here are our criteria points, in order of priority:
  • In a safe, nice neighborhood in walking distance of cafes-restaurants and grocery stores
  • 2-3 bedrooms
  • View of the mountains and good light, high floor
  • Good floors, good solid windows that keep out the sound and cold - good insulation so that we will not feel cold in the house even without any heat turned on (note, there is no central heating generally in Colombia)
  • Modern design with open kitchen and a large living room
  • Good closets, clean bathrooms and nice finishings
  • "Linea blanca" (washer-dryer, dish washing machine) must be included
  • The dryer should be hooked up to a gas line, to be more economical
  • Utilities must in the name of the owner
  • A "calentador" central water heater is part of the building so thst the supply is constant
  • A power generatr as part of the building
  • Above floor 4 (for security reasons)
  • Apt must be approved by UN Security
  • Entry way must have a ramp
  • Door and elevator must be greater than 32.5" so that the stroller can fit
  • Additional amenities - gym, pool, squash, play area for kids, terrace, party lounge
With our budget, we hopefully will get everything on our list!

UPDATE (10/6/2013):  We heard today - early this morning - that the offer we put in for an incredible penthouse apartment in Chico Virrey has been accepted!

First Week Impressions - Day ending Oct 5

Dear Bogota Expats!

We are about the end our first week in Bogota, Colombia.  Here are some of my primary first impressions on October 2013 regarding Bogota-Life!

  • CONSTRUCTION BOOM
    • There is an incredible amount of construction happening in Bogota (northern part) - of very nice high rise apts.  In the area where we are living, the prices are sky high - from 7-9 million COP per month for a 2-3 bedroom apt!  (We also did see the apt complex where Shakira and Juanes reportedly live when they come to Bogota - Penas Blancas - where the lowest and least expensive unit on surely the lowest floors go for $15 million COP per month!)
  • DRESS
    • Women often dress in very short skirts, and most of the time are in high heels or high-heeled boots and tight pants.   The younger people do dress more casually.
  • COSTS AND MONEY
    • Most things are the same price as the US though the clothing is reportedly at least double the price; there are unfortunately no price breaks as there are no places like Costco, Marshall's, TJMaxx  or IKEA.
    • The economic and geographical delineation of the population by stratas ("estratos") are widely spoken about - "You are part of strata 5 or 6" or "You're living in strata 5, maybe 6" (the highest stratas).
    • The costs of utilities are also spoken about, where water is where the greatest costs come from - and if you live in the highest stratas, the utilities cost up to 20% more.
    • When you pay for anything with a credit card, they will ask you "Cuantas quotas?" (How many payments?)  We always answer "one" though I don't know if it would make any difference with our US credit cards if we answered any other number.
  • DOMESTIC HELP
    • This is a new phenomenon for us.  Even when we were living for a few years in Buenos Aires, Argentina, we felt a little bit uncomfortable with domestic help.  This feel still lingers.
    • The cost of home help and childcare is quite a bit cheaper (!!!) than that in the US.  At this moment we are paying a nanny 45,000 COP for 8 hours of work, and a housekeeper (and nanny) 30,000 COP for 8 hours of a work a day.  (When we came to visit, we paid a very professional nanny - who was recommended and came with a CV - 80,000 COP for 8 hours of work.)  We did not set any prices and just asked how much they charge.  We have been told that generally nannies make significantly more than housekeepers do.  A Colombian friend also told us that the normal price for full time service is $250USD per month and paying up to $400 would be pretty excessive.  The other thing we were told was to make sure they cook well.  We heard from one housekeeper that they received training in cooking, etc.
    • This seems so far like something extremely easy to obtain, though you do have to take the time to train these individuals about your specific desires and expectations (i.e. taking care of your children).  I am still thinking about the generosity or friendliness that I am showing (is it appropriate?) - when I offered to make tea for the nanny, I think she was surprised, and then she was ready to leave 15 minutes earlier than the time she was supposed to.  Not sure if these two incidents are related... more later.
  • WEATHER
    • The weather is variable, changing every hour.  It's been raining a bit quite heavily, it being rainy season, but also quite bright and sunny during other times.  We have been repeated told to always carry a "saquito" (diminutive of "saco" - a jacket) and an umbrella.
  • CRIME
    • Never speak on your cell phone on the street as robbers will grab it out of your hand while you're mid-conversation and run.  Umar did see this actually happen.  Our nanny Amalia said, "Es su pan del dia" so the robbers dedicate all their time to it.
    • We went to brunch today (Sunday) at this "fancy" bakery named Masa. It is quite popular and has been written up in the international travel press.  There were lots of families and babies, and the women seemed very comfortable wearing gold jewelry and carrying their Louis Vuitton bags.
  • FEELING AT HOME
    • US (and other global) businesses we've already seen in Bogota - I'm waiting for a Cheesecake Factory to come in.  We did see a small Nobu today - though obviously not of the California-based conglomeration:
      • PF Chang's, a recent arrival
      • Fast food: McDonald's, Dunkin Donuts, Subway, KFC
      • Clothing: Express, Aeropostal, Benetton. Mango
      • Furniture: Bo Concept, Roche Bobois
      • Toy Stores: Imaginarium

Working with a Relocation Company - What to Expect!

Dear Bogota Expats!

Because my husband's organization is relocating us here, there have been a lot of nice perks, such as receiving the help of a relocation company to assist us.  We have never relocated anywhere domestically or internationally, so this has been a new experience for us - that a new one for my husband's organization as well.  (With my husband's hiring package, they started a relationship with various relocation companies it seems and we are their guinea pigs to see how this company stacks up.)

This is a tough subject I would think, as it seems all relocation companies are different and offer different services, especially as they are dealing with so many different foreign nationals who come with different expectations. We are working with a company called Latin American Relocation Management (LARM) and have had a generally very positive experience with them thus far.  [My husband has a colleague that has been assigned to RSR Relocation and they've had a very poor experience with them.  For example, our friends are having problems with their apartment after living there for only 2 weeks and their relocation company should be helping them but aren't.]  Below is a list of places and things that they have helped us with!

POSSIBLE THINGS YOU CAN ASK FOR

  • Airport Pickup, Drop off during initital visit, and for arrival
  • City tour and orientation of good neighborhoods
  • Apartment Search taking in account your top priorities, location and budget - make sure that they do show you apartments that meet your criteria points and if not, express this right away
    • Seeing apts and meeting real estate agents (corredoras)
    • Revisiting apts that we liked
    • Contract negotiations
    • Price Negotiations
    • Arranging utilities (cable, water, gas, telephone, internet)'
    • Meeting with the Property Owners
    • Move-In Day
  • Daycare Center Visits, Organizing the interview
  • Nanny-Housekeeper and Nanny Service recommendations (short, long-term)
    • Helping us interview the nannies and housekeepers
  • Sports and Hobby recommendations
    • Tennis clubs
    • Language lessons
    • Art classes, cooking schools
  • Medical professional recommendations, Hospitals, Clinics
  • Car dealerships (Toyota, Honda, Volvo, etc)
  • Bank Account set-up
  • Communication should be quick and responsive
  • Drivers License
  • Ad hoc shopping requests (food for your first week, cell phone, bagels, etc.)  We have gone food shopping various times (as our car is coming at some point in January!)
Overall, they should provide a detailed orientation and answer any questions - no matter how small - in order for you to feel right at home.

Saludos y buena suerte,
